New PURC Head Office complex marks new era for utility regulation in Ghana

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has unveiled a new Head Office Building Complex in Accra, marking a significant milestone in Ghana's utility regulation landscape. The state-of-the-art facility is seen as a major investment in the future of the sector, enabling the Commission to enhance consumer services and experience, while ensuring reliable service provision by utility companies and maintaining their financial viability.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Executive Secretary of PURC, Dr. Shafic Suleman, highlighted the role of improved cash flow in the power sector, facilitated by the Cash Waterfall Mechanism. This positive development in the flow of funds to key energy sector players, including PURC, provided the necessary financial resources to fully finance the construction of the new office complex without any outstanding payment obligations.

Dr. Shafic Suleman also expressed satisfaction with the increase in monthly declarations under the Cash Waterfall Mechanism, which has risen from approximately GH¢6 billion to GH¢15 billion. He lauded the Electricity Power Production Companies (IPP) for receiving almost 100% of their invoice bills, a testament to the government's commitment to the energy sector.

Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Jinapor, emphasized the need for PURC to focus on the commercial performance of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), calling it a critical link in the financial sustainability of the energy sector. He also urged the Commission to engage more stakeholders and support industrial competitiveness as the government implements the 24-hour economy.

The new Head office building of PURC boasts modern facilities such as electricity and water meter laboratories, a real-time monitoring room, and is designed to improve stakeholder engagement, professional development, quality assurance, and regulatory monitoring. With these enhancements, the Commission aims to provide a more efficient and conducive working environment, better equipped to respond to the evolving demands of utility consumers.
