Man dies after being mauled by stray dogs in Kiambu

A 35-year-old man, George Kimani Gitangia, passed away after being brutally attacked and bitten by stray dogs while walking home in Githunguri village, Kiambu County, early Saturday morning on August 22, 2026. According to the police, the incident took place around 3am. Kimani's cousin happened to see the dogs attacking a person and alerted the public, who quickly responded and chased the animals away.

The rescuers identified the victim as Gitangia, who had sustained numerous dog bites. He was swiftly taken to St Teresa Hospital in Kikuyu for medical attention and subsequently referred to Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi. Despite treatment, the man succumbed to his injuries while being transferred. His body was subsequently taken to the Kenyatta National Hospital mortuary, awaiting further procedures.

The police have initiated an investigation into the attack, aiming to uncover the circumstances and the location of the stray dogs involved. Police records reveal that the deceased was known as a frequent drunkard and a person of unsound mind. In another incident on the same day, a 20-year-old man, Roy Omondi, died after being stabbed in the neck during a dispute over the movement of a funeral procession at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) in Kisumu.

The tragedy unfolded on Friday around 4pm. Omondi, who was coordinating the procession, confronted a tuk-tuk driver who had obstructed the convoy. When the driver allegedly drew a knife from its sheath and stabbed Omondi, a violent confrontation ensued. The suspect fled the scene before the police arrived. A green jungle knife sheath, believed to be linked to the attack, was recovered from the scene.

Omondi was rushed to JOOTRH, where he was admitted in critical condition. Despite receiving medical care, he passed away early Saturday morning due to his injuries. The police visited the scene and preserved the knife sheath as evidence. The suspect remains at large as detectives investigate to determine his whereabouts and the circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing.
