Lions DT Skyler Gill-Howard is clicking but still not happy with 1 part of his game

Detroit Lions rookie defensive tackle Skyler Gill-Howard has made a strong impact during the team's preseason win against the Washington Commanders. While he only managed one tackle for loss and one QB hit, his overall performance score of 80.8 placed him among the best on the defensive line. Coach Dan Campbell dubbed Gill-Howard "Sun Bleach" due to his relentless play and willingness to work hard.

Gill-Howard admits that he has been improving since a slower start to training camp, adding that he is starting to react quicker and get used to the NFL game. However, the coaching staff still expects him to balance his pass-rushing skills with strong run defense. This is where Gill-Howard feels he could have improved against the Commanders, as he was not as effective in stopping the run game.

The rookie's size may also be a challenge, as he is only 6-foot and 280 pounds. In college, he used his quick first step and athleticism to get around blocks, but Detroit's offensive line scheme requires players to play with their hands better. Despite this, Gill-Howard credits his film study for a successful run game play in which he took down Commanders running back Kayton Allen for a 3-yard loss.

As the season progresses, Gill-Howard is expected to transition into a situational pass rusher. His coach and teammates are confident in his abilities, praising his craft, explosiveness, and violent play style.
