‘I cried the whole day’ – Ohemaa Mercy recalls Kufuor’s special award

Gospel singer Ohemaa Mercy has shared her emotional experience receiving an award from former President John Agyekum Kufuor for her contributions to Ghanaian music. The musician revealed her nervousness leading up to the event, stating that she initially struggled to grasp the significance of the invitation. During an interview with George Quaye on Joy Prime, she recounted being invited to the Castle in 2009, following the release of her third album, Wobeye Kesi.

Ohemaa Mercy admitted to being initially unsure about her invitation and feared that something may have gone wrong. Her doubts were further exacerbated when her mother called to inform her that President Kufor had recognized her among outstanding musicians. Initially, Ohemaa Mercy doubted the authenticity of the recognition, dismissing the news and waiting for others to receive their awards.

It wasn't until broadcaster Kwame Sefa mentioned her name that she realized the honor was real, leading her to cry throughout the day.

The moment became even more memorable when she was saluted by soldiers and stood before President Kufuor, who personally presented the award to her. Ohemaa Mercy described the experience as a turning point in her career, reminding her that her work was being recognized beyond the gospel music community.
