General : Selangor, Federal Govt Take Urgent Measures To Tackle Flooding In Klang Valley

Federal Territories Minister Hannah Yeoh and Selangor Chief Minister Amirudin Shari have joined forces to combat flood incidents in the Klang Valley. The two governments have agreed on five key measures to reduce flood risks, as reported in a joint statement. The measures include reviewing the capacity of Batu Dam and Klang Gates Dam, identifying sites for new flood retention ponds, enhancing the capacity of three existing ponds, improving river dredging and silt removal efforts, and coordinating regular progress meetings.

Both governments plan to hold a technical meeting within two weeks to outline the project details, including scope, costs, funding sources, and implementation methods. Preliminary discussions will be prepared before the upcoming Parliament session and the 2027 Budget tabling. To assess whether existing dam capacities are enough to meet water management needs, studies will be conducted on Batu Dam and Klang Gates Dam, considering technical suitability, land status, environmental impacts, and the ability to reduce flood risks.

The Selangor irrigation and drainage department will identify three ponds suitable for capacity upgrades: Kampung Laksamana Pond, Sungai Kertas Pond, and Bukit Lagong Pond. However, the Bukit Lagong Pond, located within a forest reserve, requires a change in status for its use as a retention pond. For river dredging and silt removal, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur irrigation and drainage departments will collaborate to identify rivers needing such work and locate a 30-acre site in Selangor for disposing of dredged silt waste.
