Gachagua intensifies his criticism of Murkomen, claims existence of 104 gang groups

Democracy for Citizens’ Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has harshly criticized Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen for advising Kenyans to avoid areas with political goons, alleging the presence of 104 criminal gangs nationwide. Speaking on August 23, 2026, Gachagua questioned why security agencies would caution citizens to stay away from criminal groups instead of addressing them directly.

"The nation is being overrun by young thugs... they are spreading goons across the Republic," Gachagua said. He further accused the Interior ministry of incompetence, stating, "You are a small boy, you are talking about Interior docket, there are 104 gangs, and they are receiving money to destabilize Kenya." Gachagua made these remarks while questioning Murkomen's advice from the previous day urging security agencies to take preventive measures against political violence.

Murkomen had advised police and other agencies to act on intelligence and arrest individuals involved in political violence, urging the public to avoid rallies where political goons were present. Gachagua further criticized Murkomen's approach, calling it arrogant and accusing him of pretending to be an angel while working with goons.

He questioned the government's responsibility in dealing with criminal groups, asking, "If the police confirm there are goons, why can't they deal with them?" Murkomen responded by defending his actions, stating that security forces had successfully arrested criminals before a recent political rally in Homa Bay, preventing a potential disaster.

He also emphasized the importance of political leaders collaborating with security officials when organizing public meetings, criticizing those who allegedly mobilize goons.
