Early season tests add urgency to Whiteford's training camp workouts

Whiteford's football team kicked off training camp with a heightened sense of urgency this year. The Bobcats are facing two of the toughest challenges in the 2026 season, starting with games against St. Mary Catholic Central and Pewamo-Westphalia. Both of these teams are perennial state championship contenders, adding to the pressure on the young Whiteford football squad.

Coach Todd Thieken's team will take on St. Mary Catholic Central on August 28th, followed by a visit from Pewamo-Westphalia on September 4th. The coach has observed an uptick in intensity during training, emphasizing the need to prepare for these high-stakes opponents. Whiteford players appreciate the early testing, with Caden Stewart stating it sets a clear goal and focuses their minds.

The home-field advantage is a bonus, as both games will be played at The Woods. Veterans Brek Ruddy, the All-State running back, and Tre Eitniear, the four-year starting quarterback, will lead the charge, having returned for another season. Ruddy had a stellar freshman year, rushing for 1,112 yards and scoring 21 touchdowns, while Eitniear completed 69% of his passes for 876 yards and 9 touchdowns.

Both players are excited about the upcoming challenges. Freshman Andy Trejo has moved from wide receiver to fullback, taking on the captain role, while Caden Stewart will play both tight end and defensive end. The team is counting on the veteran defensive line, including Curt Bailey and Logan Sanjur, to complement the young talent.
