Diesel subsidy improvements to be announced within a month, says Armizan

The Federal government is set to unveil enhancements to the diesel subsidy mechanism within a month, according to Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali. KPDN, the Ministry responsible, is confident the announcement will occur sooner than the earlier estimated two months. Armizan revealed that KPDN is optimistic about the timeline as they have held engagement sessions with relevant parties, and all feedback has been submitted to the Ministry of Finance (MOF).

The improvements aim to safeguard the interests of the people by implementing several optimization measures. Finance Minister II, Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, had announced on August 16 that targeted diesel subsidy improvements were being investigated, which included streamlining the application process, revising eligibility criteria for hire-purchase vehicles, and permitting quota transfers to immediate family members.

KPDN has initiated an investigation under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act against two ferry operators in Kudat for increasing ferry fares between Kudat and Banggi Island without responding to a notice requesting information. MyCC has been directed to investigate possible price-fixing collusion based on complaints of joint fare increases.

The two ferry operators have not been receiving diesel subsidies and were advised to apply for the skid tanks provided by the Malaysia Marine Department. Armizan proposed that the Sabah government study the possibility of taking over regulatory and licensing of passenger ferries under the Sabah Ports and Harbour Department to promote market competition.

He will discuss the matter with Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Ewon Benedick, who is also responsible for Sabah's transportation and ports portfolios.
