88% Indian Doctors Think Nicotine Causes Cancer

An international survey of physicians discovered that 88% of Indian doctors believed nicotine itself directly causes lung cancer, according to a report by Sermo. Additionally, 87% of Indian doctors thought nicotine caused atherosclerosis, while 86% linked nicotine to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The survey, conducted across 11 countries, aimed to assess physicians' understanding of nicotine and smoking-related diseases.

In India, a significant portion of doctors, 88%, acknowledged that nicotine alone directly causes lung cancer. This result highlights a widespread confusion among Indian health experts between nicotine, the addictive substance in tobacco, and the thousands of other chemicals present in cigarette smoke, which are primarily responsible for the health risks associated with smoking.

It is crucial to distinguish between nicotine and tobacco smoke, as tobacco smoking has been definitively linked to cancer, cardiovascular disease, and lung disease. While nicotine is highly addictive and can impact the cardiovascular system, the health risks of smoking cannot be solely attributed to nicotine. The survey also revealed substantial misconceptions among physicians in other countries, although the extent of these misunderstandings varied among nations.
