Watch: USS George Washington ramps up night flights in Arabian Sea amid Iran tensions

A U.S. aircraft carrier, the USS George Washington, performed nighttime flight operations while navigating the Arabian Sea, underscoring the ongoing U.S. military presence in the region amid escalating tensions with Iran. Images released by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) depicted the carrier's crew engaged in flight deck activities under the cover of darkness.

The USS George Washington, a Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, entered the U.S. Central Command area on August 19 as part of its routine deployment. CENTCOM did not offer additional specifics regarding the nighttime operations. This action follows the U.S. forces' proactive measures to maintain a robust naval presence in the area, particularly as Iran continues to adopt a confrontational stance, especially around the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

In response to the heightened tensions, U.S. forces have undertaken several enforcement operations, including the redirection of 68 commercial vessels, disabling three, and boarding two, by August 21. As part of these operations, over 20 warships are currently supporting the U.S. blockade against Iran. CENTCOM also shared visuals of an MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopter landing on the USS Ross, one of the multiple warships contributing to the blockade efforts.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route for global energy supplies, has seen a significant reduction in maritime traffic, currently at approximately 20 percent of its pre-war average. Despite this decline, the strategic importance of the Strait remains central to the ongoing geopolitical conflict between the United States and Iran.
