US man arrested after slashing Bangkok cop’s throat with box cutter

A 29-year-old American man, Alexander Troy Lopez, was arrested in Bangkok on August 22 after allegedly stealing from a convenience store and attacking a police officer with a box cutter, according to police reports. The incident occurred around 9:30 AM in the Suea Pa area. Upon learning of the theft at a 7-Eleven store located on Phadung Dao Road, officers were dispatched to the scene.

Traffic officer Lt. Prasarn Somkanee, who was en route on a motorcycle, witnessed the altercation and attempted to intervene. CCTV footage captured the suspect attacking the officer in the neck with a box cutter, fleeing towards Suea Pa Plaza in the aftermath. Prasarn was taken to Bangkok Metropolitan Administration General Hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition.

Police launched a search involving various units and eventually located Lopez hiding in a temporary shelter near Suan Mali Circle within 30 minutes of the attack. The box cutter used in the assault was seized by authorities. Lopez, identified as an American national, was initially described as confused and uncooperative during questioning.

Medical examinations and drug testing were conducted, revealing the presence of methamphetamine in his system. Police charged Lopez with attempted murder of an officer while on duty and an offense related to robbery. Further investigation includes reviewing his criminal record, immigration status, and additional CCTV footage and witness accounts.
