UAE and US to launch world’s first bilateral military AI task force

The United States and the United Arab Emirates have reached an agreement to create the world's inaugural bilateral military artificial intelligence (AI) task force. Dubbed Task Force Talon Synapse, this collaborative unit will be headquartered in Abu Dhabi and is anticipated to officially commence operations in the upcoming weeks. The task force will comprise approximately 20 specialists from both American and Emirati backgrounds in the fields of AI, data analytics, and cybersecurity.

Centcom (U.S. Central Command) highlighted that the task force's primary focus will be on incorporating AI into intelligence support, safeguarding critical infrastructure, and keeping a watchful eye on the regional security landscape. Adm. Brad Cooper, the commander of US Central Command, emphasized that this marks a historic milestone, as they work in tandem with one of their most proficient regional partners to swiftly deploy evolving AI advancements to their warfighters.

He further expressed their shared commitment to adopting AI applications that will foster innovation at an unprecedented pace and scale.

This initiative originated from discussions held last year between U.S. Central Command Commander Admiral Cooper and Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE's National Security Adviser, regarding the potential creation of a joint military AI unit. Following these talks, CENTCOM officials engaged with artificial intelligence industry experts and Emirati defense officials during a recent visit to the region.

The establishment of Task Force Talon Synapse signifies a further strengthening of defense and technology ties between the UAE and the United States. As artificial intelligence continues to gain prominence in military planning, intelligence, and infrastructure protection, this collaborative effort underscores the growing significance of AI in the realm of national security.
