Third Huanggang port drill went smoothly: Eric Chan

The government reported on Saturday that the third extensive drill at the new Huanggang port facility concluded successfully, meeting the anticipated outcomes and testing objectives. Approximately 10,000 civil servants participated in the simulated peak holiday scenario, evaluating the port's clearance capacity and its ability to manage passenger and vehicle movements.

Chief Secretary Eric Chan outlined that out of the 90 immigration counters and electronic channels, 60 were utilized, demonstrating a smooth operation even though this was only about two-thirds of the intended capacity. Chan expressed confidence that with the remaining 30 channels optimized, the port would manage all 10,000 passengers effortlessly once they were fully operational.

For the remaining 30 immigration channels, minor adjustments were identified to ensure full functionality. The Secretary for Security, Chris Tang, noted that around 1,000 vehicles were also integrated into the exercise to replicate heavy traffic conditions. He affirmed that despite the heavy traffic, operations remained smooth. Chan emphasized that the drill offered vital practical experience, and participating civil servants have been solicited for feedback.

The inter-departmental team responsible for the drill would continue refining procedures over the upcoming week, leading up to a more rigorous test involving 20,000 civil servants in collaboration with Shenzhen authorities. The timing for the port's opening is contingent upon confirmation from both parties that it is prepared, after which the public will be notified as soon as possible.
