United States President Donald Trump recently reiterated his claim that the Strait of Hormuz is "American territory." During his speech in Mulletville, South Carolina on August 21, Trump remarked, "Iran is desperately hoping for a deal, but I'm not sure they even want a deal," adding, "That's because I consider the Strait of Hormuz to be American territory."

He emphasized this point multiple times, stating, "It's an American territory." Trump's assertion that the Strait of Hormuz is American territory is not a new claim; he made a similar statement in a speech in Long Island, New York on July 14, saying, "Once we defeat Iran, we'll declare the Strait of Hormuz to be American territory soon.

No vessel (will be able to) pass through it unless we want it to." In addition, Trump posted a map of the Strait of Hormuz as "New U.S. Territory" on Twitter on July 18. During his speech, Trump also humorously joked about bombing Iran, saying, "It's Friday night, I have time. What am I going to do? Go back and bomb Iran a little bit more?"

Trump's continued "American territory" claims come as a part of his desire to pressure Iran in negotiations aimed at ending the war. The timing of his current on-the-ground speech coincides with the runoff primary election on August 25, in which Republican candidate Graham is being endorsed by Trump's close confidant, late Sen. Lindsey Graham.

In his speech, Trump urged voters, "If the 'Trump' name is not on the ballot, I really urge you to think of me as being on the ballot and just come and vote for me." He warned that if the Democrats win, they will take everything away from him, and he would face impeachment.
