Six new railway halts in Sabah to open in October
KOTA KINABALU: Six new railway halts along the Sembulan-Kinarut route have been completed and are expected to begin operations in October, says Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick.
KOTA KINABALU – Six new railway halts along the Sembulan-Kinarut route are set to commence operations in October, according to Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick. These halts – Lok Kawi, Tombovo, Meruntum, Bukit Vor, Petagas, and Petagas War Memorial – were finalized earlier this year as part of a push to enhance public access to rail services.
Ewon, who also serves as the state's Industrial Development, Entrepreneurship, and Transportation Minister, highlighted the new halts during the 130th Railway Day programme at Tanjung Aru Station today. Unlike main stations, these newly added halts offer the public fresh choices and greater convenience, reducing their reliance solely on prominent stations.
The facilities aim to provide an alternative mode of public transport, particularly as the expense of private vehicle use, including fuel, continues to burden road users. Ewon expressed his anticipation for the outcome of a study on extending the railway network from Putatan to Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP), encompassing Sepanggar Port.
He expressed hope that, once the study is finished and presented to the ministry or state government, a decision on the subsequent steps can be reached.
