Sam Budnyk honored in Cardinal Newman season-opening win | D'Angelo

Cardinal Newman honored veteran football coach Sam Budnyk in their season-opening victory over the Seahawks with a 37-6 win. Maurita Budnyk, Sam's late wife, flipped a commemorative coin naming the stadium in his honor before the game. Budnyk coached the school for 46 years, starting in 1961, and his impact on players and the community was immense.

Cardinal Newman coach Jack Daniels praised his players for honoring Budnyk's legacy, despite some penalties. The tribute to Budnyk was held more than a month after his death, with reminders of his career displayed in the cafeteria. The school will continue to honor him with a decal on the back of their helmets.
