No president has fought galamsey more seriously than Mahama – NDC Communicator

Lawyer Nathaniel Tetteh of the NDC/Government Communications Team has stated that no previous Ghanaian president has prioritized the fight against illegal mining, or galamsey, as much as President John Dramani Mahama. Speaking on Adom TV's Nnawɔtɔ Yi programme, Tetteh highlighted the numerous actions taken by the Mahama administration to combat the illegal mining issue, which endangers the nation's environment and water sources.

He provided evidence of the government's commitment, stating that over 258 individuals are currently facing trial for galamsey, while more than 200 excavators have been confiscated, with 34 subsequently destroyed. Additionally, Tetteh noted that 1,469 pumping machines, 950 changfan machines, more than 285 motorbikes, and 82 gold detectors have also been seized from illegal mining operations.

Tetteh emphasized that these figures reflect the significant steps taken by the government to curb illegal mining activities. He affirmed President Mahama's ongoing dedication to addressing the issue, as he had promised during his election campaign. Despite acknowledging that further efforts are required, Tetteh expressed the government's determination to prosecute those involved in illegal mining and ultimately bring the problem under control.

Tetteh urged Ghanaians to trust President Mahama's efforts to tackle the persistent illegal mining issue that has plagued the country for years, asserting that anyone claiming Mahama has done nothing to combat galamsey is being dishonest.
