Nebraska school district asks police to stop using shock gloves on students

Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District, historically a Republican stronghold, backed Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris over President Donald Trump in the 2020 election, despite the state's staunch Republican voting history. In the city of Omaha, this demographic divide is reflected in the race between fellow Republican and City Councilmember Brinker Harding and Democratic activist Denise Powell, both vying for the open seat left by retiring Rep. Don Bacon.

Harding, an Omaha City Councilmember, is receiving support from Republican leaders including House Speaker Mike Johnson and Majority Leader Steve Scalise, while Powell has garnered endorsements from potential Democratic presidential candidates Pete Buttigieg and Rahm Emanuel. Both candidates have been making efforts to connect with voters through door-to-door canvassing, discussing issues such as the impact of Trump's policies and business dealings on the electorate's daily lives.

Nebraska's electoral system allows for splitting of presidential electoral votes, and the district has gone Democratic three times out of five times since 2008, making it a "Blue Dot" in an otherwise Republican-dominated state. However, a Democrat has only won the House seat once since 1994. As Trump gears up for his Republican midterm convention in Dallas, Democrats are hoping to capitalize on the unique characteristics of this "Blue Dot" district for a potential wave of Democratic victories in the upcoming midterm elections.
