'Mum, this is for you': Adib's tearful call after historic Sukma triumph

Nilai: Sarawak cyclist Adib Andhar Andan delivered a historic Malaysia Games (Sukma) track cycling gold medal to his mother Rohayu Ealhi, providing her a tearful birthday surprise on August 20, 2026. The 21-year-old triumphed in the men's keirin at the 2026 Selangor Games at the National Velodrome. Rohayu, who celebrated her birthday on the same day, was the recipient of Adib's dedication speech.

Johor's Ahmad Danial Haiqal secured the silver, while Luqman Haqim of Negri Sembilan claimed bronze. Adib expressed his emotions, saying he was very happy as this gold medal was a present for his mum's birthday. Despite not being able to celebrate with his mother in person due to her absence in Sarawak, Adib immediately called her after the race and broke down in tears while breaking the news.

The gold medal was particularly special as it was Adib's final Sukma appearance, as he had previously competed in road cycling at the 2024 Sarawak Games without winning a medal. Adib's achievement is even more remarkable given that he only started track cycling last year, but he has already progressed to international competitions, including the World Cup and Asian Track Championships (ACC).

He credits his experiences in those events for building his confidence to handle the pressure of being a national athlete and compete against top riders. Adib's next target is the sprint event on Sunday, followed by the Thailand Track Cup on August 28.
