Messi fined for slapping opponent in MLS game

Inter Miami's veteran player Lionel Messi has been fined for slapping Philadelphia Union's Quinn Sullivan during their Major League Soccer (MLS) match on Wednesday. The Argentine star, 39, was seen slapping Sullivan around the back of the head near the conclusion of the game, after claiming Union's player had elbowed him after Messi played the ball. Union's Sullivan retaliated angrily to the slap, but the referee intervened swiftly.

The MLS disclosed Messi received a fine, though the exact amount was not disclosed. Messi did contribute to his side's draw, scoring Inter Miami's second goal at Subaru Park after a long absence following his father's passing. The Argentina international was not alone in his disagreement with Sullivan, as Miami's Ian Fray was also fined by the MLS. Fray had grabbed Sullivan's neck after both players became entangled when Sullivan lost his footing in the penalty area.

Tensions ran high in the match, culminating in two red cards as Miami's Yannick Bright and Sullivan's brother Cavan were both sent off in stoppage time. Cavan's one-game suspension was later rescinded following a review. Currently, Miami hold second place in the Eastern Conference, trailing leaders Nashville by seven points. Messi returned to Miami after spending time in Argentina for his father's funeral.

Following his father's death from a long illness at the age of 68, Messi expressed the possibility of retiring from professional football sooner than anticipated.
