Man assaults over 90-year-old aunt over witchcraft allegations in Navrongo

A 45-year-old man named Apana Awasiaku allegedly attacked his 90-year-old aunt, Atima Alugu, in Biu, a suburb of Navrongo in the Upper East Region, due to accusations of witchcraft. A video showed Awasiaku physically assaulting Alugu, who is believed to be living alone. According to the family, Awasiaku accused her of causing the deaths of young people in the community.

The incident occurred when Awasiaku rode a tricycle to Alugu's house and threatened her with death if she or he did not comply. After striking her with a wooden writing slate, she attempted to sit up, but Awasiaku forced her back down, prompting her to scream for help. A neighbor heard her cries and came to her aid, but Awasiaku pursued her and the assault continued.

Neighbors pleaded with him to stop, but by the time help arrived, Alugu had suffered severe beatings. The family claims Awasiaku was ordered to either pay compensation or serve jail time, but he has not paid and continues to reside in the community. Alugu has been moved to her grandchildren's home for safety, and the family accuses the police of mishandling the case.
