Newcastle will be looking to keep their top four hopes alive when they face Manly in the Hunter on Old Boys Day. Follow live.
Newcastle Knights secured a historic 45-26 victory over South Sydney, sending them to the top of the NRL ladder with just a slim margin. Rookie Luke Hanson kicked the winning field goal, marking his second NRL game with a crucial one-point kick from 30 meters. Hooker Wayde Egan masterminded the Warriors' win, which sent them past Penrith and the Sydney Roosters on points differential.
The Roosters, currently third, will play Wests Tigers on Sunday. The Knights will face Newcastle and Manly in their final two rounds, while Penrith will face Canterbury and Wests Tigers. Canterbury kept their NRL finals hopes alive with a 44-14 win over St George Illawarra, who are likely to finish with their first wooden spoon.
