Krieg gegen die Ukraine: Wadephul kurz vor Unabhängigkeitstag in Kiew

As Ukraine prepares to celebrate its 35th anniversary of independence on Monday, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul made a solidarity visit to the country, which has been under attack by Russia. Upon arriving in Kiev by special train, the CDU politician condemned the escalating Russian drone and missile strikes, accusing Moscow of "random killing of civilians" and the deliberate destruction of Ukraine's energy infrastructure.

Wadephul argued that Russia aims to destroy the livelihood of Ukrainians and break their resolve to persist. The summer months of July and August proved to be the most lethal for Ukrainian civilians in over four years, with Russia firing more missiles on its neighboring nation than ever before. Wadephul pledged further support to Ukraine and expressed hope that Russia could be persuaded to engage in peace negotiations.

Germany has invested significantly in both military and financial aid for Ukraine, making this their fourth visit since assuming office 16 months ago. As usual, the visit remains discreet, with no public announcement and a tightly guarded agenda centered on discussions with Ukrainian leadership. Ukraine declared its independence from the Soviet Union 35 years ago, and celebrations around this milestone are being held primarily in the capital, Kiev.
