Inter thrash Monza to launch Serie A title defence

Inter Milan began their Serie A title defence with a commanding 4-1 victory over promoted Monza at their home stadium on Saturday. Hakan Calhanoglu opened the scoring in the six-minute mark with a powerful shot. Monza equalized in the 29th minute through Gustavo Varela, but Inter promptly regained the lead when Piotr Zielinski put them ahead in the 48th minute.

Andy Diouf's cross found Pio Esposito, who netted the third goal eight minutes later. Yann Bisseck sealed the win in the 63rd minute, completing a dominant performance for the defending champions. Inter's coach, Cristian Chivu, acknowledged the team's initial sluggishness but praised their recovery and clarity after the halftime break.

John Stones, one of three England internationals signed by Inter this summer, made his debut as a late substitute. Elsewhere, Como secured a 1-1 draw with Udinese, earning a Champions League spot for the first time since new coach Cesc Fabregas took charge. Napoli, last season's runners-up, will face Genoa in their opening league match this weekend, while Milan and Juventus kick off their new campaigns against Torino and Frosinone respectively.
