Indonesia, China deepen partnership to achieve development goals

Jakarta, Indonesia saw a boost in military ties and cooperation with China on Friday, as both nations aim to enhance their partnership across various sectors. Defence Minister Dong Jun and Foreign Minister Wang Yi discussed bolstering military collaboration, with a focus on areas such as artificial intelligence, defence, rail transport, green energy, satellites, and fisheries.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has advocated for a non-aligned foreign policy, fostering relationships with multiple countries, including China and the United States, a significant trade partner for Indonesia.

China, a major investor in Indonesia with a $1.4 trillion G20 economy, dominates the processing of nickel, tin, copper, gold, and bauxite. The Indonesia-India-China cooperation has seen an increase in quality and effectiveness, with plans for joint exercises and officer exchanges. Furthermore, a joint munitions factory in Indonesia is set to begin operations by 2027, producing ammunition, missiles, and rockets, signaling higher cooperation in defence capabilities.

The visit between the defence and foreign ministers of China and Indonesia also discussed a joint munitions factory, which is expected to start operation by 2027. This progressive step reflects Indonesia's efforts to enhance its defence power in the current geopolitical landscape. Despite tensions in the South China Sea, Indonesia maintains a measured approach, avoiding alignment with any territorial disputes involving China and other nations.
