Imran Khan’s party seeks contempt action over jailed leader’s hospital move

Kashmir chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq expressed concern on Friday (August 21, 2026) regarding the reports of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan being moved to a jail once again. Mirwaiz emphasized that the rights of political prisoners are universal, regardless of geography, government, or political affiliation. He stressed that those incarcerated must be treated with dignity and humanity, and have access to proper medical care, family, legal counsel, and due process.

Mirwaiz called for the court orders to be respected and the rule of law upheld, stressing that political differences cannot justify denying a prisoner their fundamental rights. Earlier in his Friday sermon at the historic Jama Masjid, Mirwaiz raised the issue of "restrictions and attempts to silence the pulpit."
