How to Watch the Insidious Movies in Order

Insidious is a beloved horror movie franchise created by Leigh Whannell and James Wan, creators of the Saw series. The story follows a family's struggle to save their son from the Further, and it has spawned six sequels. The movies are closely connected, with some characters appearing in all six films.

If you're interested in watching the series in the order they were released, the six movies are: Insidious (2010), Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013), Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015), Insidious: The Last Key (2018), Insidious: The Red Door (2023), and Insidious: Out of the Further (2026). The movie timeline, however, differs slightly due to the inclusion of two prequels.

On the chronological timeline, the first movie is Insidious: Chapter 3, a prequel exploring Elise Rainier's psychic powers. Next comes Insidious: The Last Key, which follows Elise on an investigation in her childhood home and includes flashbacks from before other movies in the series. The original Insidious movie follows the Lambert family into a haunted home and their quest to save their son. The franchise then moves forward with Insidious: Chapter 2, a direct sequel focusing on the family once again facing evil forces.

The Red Door takes place around a decade after Chapter 2, with the Lamberts grappling with more complicated family dynamics. This is the directorial debut for Patrick Wilson, the actor playing Josh Lambert. Finally, Insidious: Out of the Further follows a new character, Gemma, who possesses a unique psychic power, and connects back to the rest of the franchise.

Currently, all Insidious movies can be streamed on various platforms. The original trilogy is available on Peacock, while the rest are rented or purchased digitally. Other than Out of the Further, which is still in theaters, all movies have received 4K Blu-ray releases. As of now, there doesn't seem to be a direct follow-up to Out of the Further.

However, James Wan has mentioned the possibility of crossovers with other Blumhouse properties, and there was an announced spin-off, Thread: An Insidious Tale, involving Kumail Nanjiani and Mandy Moore, although no further updates have been reported.
