Ebola outbreak ‘growing faster, wider’ as DRC death toll passes 2,500

The Ebola virus is rapidly spreading and expanding its reach in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), according to the United Nations. Senior Ebola Coordinator Julien Harneis warned that the outbreak is occurring at an "exponential" rate and is spreading both faster and wider than ever before. As of now, more than 2,500 people have lost their lives to the disease. Harneis called for increased funding to combat the spread, noting that the current financial resources will be exhausted within weeks.

Since May, controlling the epidemic has been fraught with challenges. Conflict and a lack of government control, particularly in eastern DRC, have severely disrupted efforts. Health workers, many of whom have contracted the virus and tragically died, have faced opposition from locals, resulting in over 260 attacks on healthcare personnel in the past six months, with eight fatalities among them. Additionally, 160 healthcare workers have fallen ill, and 43 have succumbed to the disease.

Aid workers have observed that many locals hold conspiracy theories that the outbreak is a fabrication, leading to angry reactions when health restrictions prevent them from performing traditional burial rites for their deceased loved ones. The efforts to contain the epidemic are further complicated by the absence of a vaccine for the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which causes severe hemorrhagic fever.

The already challenging security situation adds to the difficulties, with the UN official emphasizing that the epidemic could potentially spread to neighboring countries if a more robust response is not implemented. He urged for more staffing and resources to reach remote areas in the midst of the ongoing crisis.
