CMC performs rare robotic surgery

The Department of Paediatric Surgery at Christian Medical College (CMC) in Vellore recently achieved a groundbreaking milestone in paediatric robotic surgery. A child under 10, diagnosed with a rare cancer of the bile ducts, underwent a successful robotic pylorus preserving Whipple procedure. The surgery involved the removal of the entire tumour while meticulously preserving the pylorus, a part of the stomach.

Utilising a robotic platform, the medical team enjoyed superior 3D vision and precise dissection capabilities, facilitating delicate reconstruction. Post-surgery, the child underwent a two-week recovery period before resuming chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments. CMC Vellore's paediatric surgical team regularly performs intricate robotic ablation and reconstruction surgeries in the chest and abdomen.

Robotic technology has enabled lung-preserving operations, allowing the hospital to deliver advanced reconstructive minimally invasive procedures to children across the country.
