Canada vows to match Trump’s 50% tariffs after trade deal talks fail

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney accused the United States of implementing "unfair" last-minute changes to an ongoing trade deal, as both nations failed to reach an agreement after extending talks for three days. Carney stated that these alterations were "uneconomic" and raised concerns about the deal's reliability. The United States is imposing 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods due to the failure to finalize the trade deal by the midnight deadline.

US Trade Representative Jamie Greer announced that Canada had declined to finalize the trade deal under the terms agreed earlier in the week. Despite the US offering Canada the "best treatment of any major exporter to our market," new demands and withdrawals of commitments by Canada disrupted the balance achieved in recent days.

The tariffs, set to take effect at 12:01 AM Wednesday, will affect about 5% of Canada's annual exports to the US, encompassing a wide range of products, from hockey sticks to tongue depressors. The economic impact of these tariffs is substantial, with the two countries trading $880 billion in goods and services last year. The political ramifications, however, may prove even more significant, given the historical closeness between the two nations.
