Five people lost their lives and two sustained injuries after a speeding bus collided with a crowd watching an orchestra performance during a Chhathi ceremony in a village near Lauriya, West Champaran, Bihar, late Friday evening, according to police reports. The incident occurred around 11pm when the crowd spilled onto the road while enjoying the programme.

The station house officer, Inderjeet Paswan, stated that the bus, en route from Gorakhpur to Bettiah, lost control and ploughed into the gathering, resulting in the deaths of five individuals and injuries to two others. SDPO Jai Prakash Singh confirmed that two victims died immediately, while the remaining three succumbed to their injuries at a government hospital in Narkatiaganj.

The bus driver fled the scene, abandoning the speeding vehicle, which was subsequently seized by the police.
