Around 100 injured after pitch invasion during German Cup match

Berlin witnessed a chaotic scene on Friday when around 100 people, including 35 police officers, sustained injuries during a pitch invasion at the German Cup first round match between host team Waldhof Mannheim and visitors Kaiserslautern. The match, marked as high risk due to the intense rivalry between the fans, was halted for approximately 30 minutes after the scores remained tied at 0-0 at full-time.

Police reported that fans from Kaiserslautern's end lobbed flares towards the main stand, which prompted home supporters to storm the pitch in retaliation.

Out of the 85 individuals who sought medical help, eight required hospitalization for further treatment, according to the local police statement. To restore order, nearly 1,400 police officers were deployed to the scene, with physical intervention employed to push the aggressors back towards the home supporters' section. The match resumed once the situation had been brought under control, ultimately concluding with a 1-0 victory for Kaiserslautern. The home team's scorer, Ibrahim Kanate, netted the winning goal in the 120th minute.
