Apple Music to Roll Out 'Made With AI' Labels on Tracks

Apple Music is set to launch a new feature in the coming months that will label songs created using generative artificial intelligence technology on its streaming service. According to a memo obtained by Variety, the platform will require record labels and distributors to tag tracks where a significant portion of the content was produced using AI tools.

This initiative builds upon Apple Music's existing AI Transparency Tagging system, which was introduced in March 2026, allowing distributors to flag AI usage in their internal metadata. Apple Music emphasized that content providers are crucial partners in this endeavor, as they possess the best knowledge regarding the creation process of their content.

The exact launch date for the public display of Made With AI Labels has yet to be determined, but the shift represents a move from voluntary reporting to formal requirements, as reported by Engadget. Previously, the identification of AI-generated tracks largely depended on individual distributor preferences, leaving a substantial amount of uploaded content untagged.

The music industry has been under increasing pressure to tackle the surge of AI-generated music. Various major streaming services have adopted diverse approaches, ranging from strict licensing and copyright litigation to royalty bans. Spotify recently started marking synthetic artist profiles as 'AI Personas,' while Tidal banned fully AI-generated tracks from collecting royalty payouts.

Global industry groups, including the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and SAG-AFTRA, have jointly advocated for standardized labeling across all digital platforms. Apple Music's Vice President Oliver Schusser previously informed Billboard that over a third of daily track uploads to the platform are entirely generated by AI.

Schusser acknowledged that Apple employs internal screening software to detect AI models, but uploaders remain primarily responsible for transparency. Schusser noted that every label worldwide is incorporating AI, even if they may not be aware of it, and they, too, need to develop tools to grasp the scope of AI usage.
