Another child's room now a silent memorial to the toll of school shootings

In the south Minneapolis neighborhood, a second-floor bedroom remains frozen in time, serving as a silent memorial for 8-year-old Fletcher Merkel. His parents, Jesse and Mollie Merkel, believe this room is the best way to honor their son, who was one of two victims killed in a shooting at the Annunciation Catholic Church and School on August 27, 2025.

Mollie explained that the room holds a deeply personal significance for them, as it represents who Fletcher was as a person. They have visited several such rooms for the Netflix documentary, "All the Empty Rooms," which won an Academy Award last March. However, this latest visit was only the beginning, as the filmmakers plan to continue documenting these spaces for any parents who wish to participate, as the school shooting epidemic continues in America.

Jesse and Mollie shared photos from Fletcher's bedroom, capturing the essence of his life through his belongings - shoes, a blanket, Legos, his Buffalo football jersey, and even a journal detailing his plan to steal cookies from the downstairs jar. Despite the tragic loss, Mollie emphasized the importance of preserving Fletcher's memory through these tangible reminders of his playful and curious spirit.
