After Root, Stokes calls ECB decision 'shambolic' over Headingley’s exclusion

Ben Stokes has criticized the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for their decision to exclude Headingley and Manchester's Old Trafford from the 2027 men's Ashes schedule. The former England Test captain called the move "shambolic," emphasizing the word's inadequacy in describing his frustration. This comes after England's dominant 103-run victory over Pakistan in the first Test of their three-match series at Headingley.

Newly appointed Test captain Joe Root had earlier described Headingley's absence from the 2027 Ashes schedule as a "shame," highlighting England's strong performance at the Leeds venue. Stokes took to Instagram to share his thoughts, stating, "Great win though," following the match. Headingley, along with Old Trafford, is not among the five venues selected by the ECB for the 2027 Ashes series, which includes Trent Bridge, Lords, Edgbaston, the Rose Bowl (Utilita Bowl), and The Oval.

The omission has drawn criticism due to Headingley's rich Ashes history and current success, with the venue boasting a seven-match winning streak. Stokes' comments on the decision come in the wake of Root's emphasis on the importance of playing Ashes cricket in northern venues.
