‘Africa’s prosperity is not a threat to anybody’ — Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has dismissed worries that a more prosperous and self-sufficient Africa could threaten other nations. He argued that Africa's economic growth would instead boost global prosperity. Referring to an interview with TRT World on Friday, August 21, 2026, Mahama urged Africa to shift its focus from political liberation struggles to addressing the economic challenges faced by current generations.

He emphasized that Africa's pursuit of wealth should not be seen as a zero-sum game where the benefits come at the expense of other regions. "Africa's prosperity is not a threat to anybody," Mahama stated, adding that the continent's transformation would create stronger markets and new opportunities, helping to tackle longstanding issues.

His remarks come as there is growing momentum across Africa for greater economic self-reliance, increased value addition, and stronger participation in decisions affecting the continent's resources and development. Mahama clarified that his call for economic self-reliance does not mean rejecting international cooperation. Instead, Africa should approach partnerships with international partners on its own terms, exercising greater influence over the conditions of cooperation and the use of its resources.

He stressed that Africa should not be a dependent continent, and that the continent must build its influence in global affairs to better shape decisions impacting its future and the global economy.
