World : Pakistan, Syria Discuss Expanding Defence, Security Cooperation

Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir held discussions with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan Al-Shaibani on Friday, focusing on defence and security cooperation, according to the military's media wing. The meeting occurred at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, where they deliberated on matters of mutual interest, the regional security environment, and avenues for bolstering bilateral defence and security ties.

Field Marshal Munir emphasized Pakistan's enduring friendship with Syria and shared the nation's outlook on global peace and regional stability. The military's statement highlighted Munir's recognition of the armed forces' crucial role in fostering regional peace and stability. Both parties expressed their commitment to further strengthening bilateral ties and expanding engagements in defence and security.

Syrian Foreign Minister Al-Shaibani arrived in Islamabad on Thursday at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. During his visit, he also met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who stressed the importance of translating Pakistan and Syria's long-standing relationship into enhanced cooperation across various domains, including politics, defence, trade, investment, education, and human resource development.

The Syrian minister proposed the establishment of a Pakistan-Syria Joint Business Council to facilitate direct interaction between the business communities of the two nations.

This visit by a Syrian foreign minister to Pakistan marks the first such occasion since Walid al-Mouallem paid a visit to Islamabad in May 2007. The meeting follows the change of government in Damascus.
