Currently, he is on a rehab assignment, expected to return to the lineup as the everyday shortstop. However, Story's performance has not been up to par, with a .206 average through 41 games, falling short of his .741 OPS and 25 home runs this past season.

The Red Sox face a dilemma if Story struggles upon his return. Their immediate option seems to be benching him, but given his $25 million salary, finding a suitable replacement becomes crucial. One potential candidate is Andruw Monasterio, who has been the everyday shortstop since July 22 and boasts the third-best OPS on the team since July 1. Despite his defensive limitations, Monasterio's batting prowess warrants his spot in the lineup if Story is benched.
