Wamalwa: Natembeya is neither my competitor nor my equal

Former Defence Minister Eugene Wamalwa has downplayed Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya as neither a political rival nor his political equal. In an interview on Thursday, August 21, 2026, Wamalwa, who is the head of the Democratic Action Party (DAP-K), clarified his stance on Natembeya, stating that the governor is not his competitor and not his contemporary.

He emphasized that Natembeya is his political protégé, whom he nurtured into politics, and urged him to mature further before seeking higher political office. Wamalwa further noted that Natembeya's primary focus is his bid for a second term as Trans Nzoia governor, whereas Wamalwa's ambition lies in a presidential run during the 2027 general election.

This, according to Wamalwa, means that there is no rivalry between the two leaders; instead, their political interests diverge significantly. He further dismissed allegations of Natembeya severing ties with DAP-K, asserting that Natembeya remains an active member of the party and holds the position of deputy party leader. These comments are made against the backdrop of a growing political rift between the two leaders, ignited by Natembeya's recent shift from DAP-K to align with the Linda Mwananchi movement under Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.

Despite Natembeya's move to the Linda Mwananchi, Wamalwa maintained that Natembeya is still aligned with the opposition cause, serving within the political movement aiming to challenge President William Ruto. Natembeya has since deepened his collaboration with Sifuna and the Linda Mwananchi movement, which is set to form a new political party ahead of the 2027 elections.

The governor also announced his intent to contest for his gubernatorial seat on DAP-K's ticket while backing Sifuna's campaign for the presidency.
