Volkswagen launches $13,400 ID. Era 5S with 160km electric range

Volkswagen has introduced a new sedan in China, the ID. Era 5S, priced at approximately $13,400. This model features a plug-in hybrid powertrain, with an electric-only range of up to 160km, as confirmed during its unveiling at the 2026 Chengdu Auto Show. The vehicle is manufactured through a joint venture between Volkswagen and SAIC, targeting China's competitive market for affordable new-energy vehicles.

The ID. Era 5S is built using a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine alongside a 130kW electric motor, powered by a 19.1kWh LFP battery provided by Rept Battero Energy. Volkswagen asserts the sedan can cover up to 160km using the electric motor under China's CLTC testing cycle. It supports both AC and DC charging, with the latter capable of charging the battery from 30% to 80% within 15 minutes. Vehicle-to-load functionality is also included.

Measuring 4,836mm in length and powered by a 2,766mm wheelbase, the ID. Era 5S sends power to the front wheels via a suspension setup combining MacPherson struts at the front and a multi-link arrangement at the rear. Inside, the sedan boasts a 15.6-inch infotainment display, an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, and connectivity through Apple CarPlay, Huawei HiCar, and CarLink.

Higher-end versions offer additional features like heated and ventilated seats, a 16-speaker sound system, and navigation-assisted driving functions.

Five variants of the ID. Era 5S are available, with prices ranging from 89,900 yuan ($13,260) to 149,900 yuan ($22,080). Volkswagen is providing incentives, including a 30,000 yuan discount on the official list price and additional incentives such as a 1,000-yuan deposit converting to 5,000 yuan off the final payment and trade-in subsidies. Pre-sales for the ID. ERA 5S began on August 11 with a base price of 115,900 yuan.

This model's significance lies in Volkswagen's effort to compete with China's rapidly evolving domestic car industry, emphasizing aggressive pricing, long electric range, and advanced technology. In the past 24 hours, three cars priced under $20,000 were launched in China, including the Volkswagen ID. Era 5S, Hyundai, and MG.
