USS Lincoln leaves Middle East after 9-month deployment as Trump ramps up economic pressure on Iran

The USS George Washington, a U.S. aircraft carrier, arrived in the Middle East on Wednesday, bolstering naval presence in the region amid intensified pressure on Iran. The carrier joined the fleet following a scheduled deployment from the Arabian Sea, where it had been stationed near the Persian Gulf for over 260 days. The George Washington is set to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln, whose prolonged deployment had led to deteriorating conditions onboard, including reports of a sailor jumping overboard due to mental health concerns.

This move allows the Lincoln to return to its home port, reinforcing the U.S.'s naval pressure on Iran as President Donald Trump vows to continue the maritime blockade until Tehran accedes to American demands. Despite Iran's insistence that it will not yield under such pressure, a senior official warned of the possibility of renewed escalation if the blockade is not lifted within weeks.

The U.S. has announced plans to intensify economic measures against Iran, describing them as "economic warfare and isolation on an unprecedented scale." These measures, to be detailed in a Treasury Department news conference, aim to cripple Iran's economy and isolate it from global trade. Meanwhile, Iran's Foreign Ministry denounced these sanctions as an act of economic terrorism and a crime against humanity, reaffirming Iran's resolve to defend its national interests against any form of pressure.

Separately, the U.S. State Department approved a $4.5 billion sale of KC-46A aerial refueling aircraft and related military equipment to Qatar, enhancing the country's capabilities to counter regional threats and strengthen interoperability with U.S. and allied forces.
