Two Civil Defence officials sacked over Gul Plaza fire

Karachi - The Sindh Home Department has dismissed two Civil Defence officials following allegations of misconduct relating to the tragic Gul Plaza fire that claimed over 80 lives in the city, revealed on Thursday. According to Additional Chief Secretary Muhammad Iqbal Memon, Fatima Memon, additional controller (BS-17), Civil Defence South, was immediately removed from her position due to her failure to ensure regular fire safety audits of the Gul Plaza Shopping Centre.

The additional controller allegedly withheld rectifying the identified deficiencies in compliance with the Civil Defence Rules, 1951. Furthermore, she is accused of collaborating with Mirza Mursaleen Baig, a senior instructor in the Karachi South district, to forge and manipulate backdated fire safety audit reports for 2024 and 2025, following the fire that occurred on January 17, 2026.

Both officials were found guilty of issuing "dubious and manipulated inspection memos" for the years in question by the Implementation Committee, which investigated the circumstances surrounding the calamity.
