Trump announces temporary tariff relief on ground beef imports

President Donald Trump announced on Friday that the United States would temporarily allow a larger volume of foreign beef imports to lower costs for American consumers as the midterm elections approach. The US cattle herd has shrunk to its smallest size since the 1950s, partly due to drought and international competition, leading to higher beef product prices.

For the next 90 days, the US will permit up to 300,000 metric tons of ground beef to be imported with no out-of-quota tariff, according to Trump's announcement on his Truth Social platform. The tariff-free imports are expected to be sold at 25 percent below market prices. However, cattle and rancher groups have been resistant to the move, with Senator Deb Fischer of Nebraska expressing disappointment.

The National Cattlemen's Beef Association also criticized the plan, stating that it does not help rebuild the American cattle herd and poses long-term risks. Trump defended his decision, urging lower beef prices as voters seek relief from high living costs, including inflation driven by an energy crisis linked to the war on Iran.
