South Korea's SK Hynix considers multitrillion-won memory chip plant in Japan - report

South Korea's SK Hynix is considering establishing a memory chip manufacturing plant in Japan's Miyagi prefecture, potentially investing tens of trillions of won in the project, according to a report by the Hankyoreh newspaper on August 21. Industry sources cited by the newspaper suggest that SK Hynix is pursuing this investment as it seeks to bolster production capacity in the face of increasing global demand for memory chips.

SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won recently toured the region, which is recognized by Japan as one of its key semiconductor industry hubs. If this plan proceeds, it would represent the inaugural large-scale semiconductor manufacturing investment in Japan undertaken by a South Korean chip manufacturer, per the report. SK Hynix has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the reported initiative.
