South China floods death toll jumps to 159 with 10 still missing

Beijing, August 21 - The death toll from the devastating floods in southern China last month has risen to 159, with ten people still unaccounted for, according to state media reports. Typhoon Maysak caused havoc across parts of southern China in July, causing torrential rain and severe flooding in Guangxi. Initially, state media reported that 39 people had been killed in the region.

However, the disaster has now resulted in 159 deaths and 10 missing persons, as stated by CCTV. The broadcaster did not provide details on the reason for the delayed update on the death toll. According to reports from separate meetings held in Nanning and Guigang, Guangxi, the disaster has affected more than 1.65 million people across the two cities.

Both areas have now fully entered the post-disaster recovery and reconstruction phase. Out of the 159 reported deaths in July, 26 were linked to a dam breach at Guangxi’s Liulan Reservoir.
