The Principal of Shama Technical Institute (SHATEC), Mr Paul Quaysie, has expressed concern over the lack of adequate infrastructure at the school in the Western Region. Mr Quaysie stated that the institute is struggling to accommodate its growing student population and appealed for support from the government, private sector, and other stakeholders.
He highlighted the need for the construction of a stalled three-storey classroom block to alleviate the pressure on the school. The project, initiated in 2022, was primarily funded by the school's Internally Generated Fund (IGF) and student labor. Additional facilities required by the school include dormitories, an assembly hall, an administration block, well-equipped practical workshops, a dining hall, teachers' bungalows, and transportation.
Mr Quaysie appealed to the Shama Municipal Assembly, companies like the Volta River Authority (VRA), Tullow Ghana, and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) to provide assistance. He also emphasized the need for the government and the Ghana TVET Service to hire more teachers to address staffing gaps, particularly in the Electrical Engineering and Architecture departments.
With only two permanent teachers in Electrical Engineering, despite a large student population, and no permanent teacher for the Architecture Department with 81 students, Mr Quaysie has had to step in to facilitate teaching in these areas. SHATEC, established in 2000, offers programs in various technical fields and has trained over 2,000 people through its mainstream and sponsored programs.
