"Saglemi is not the last": President Mahama signals new national housing scheme

President John Dramani Mahama has stated that the Saglemi Housing Project is not the last housing initiative by the government. The Finance Minister will announce a major national housing program in the upcoming budget. Developer LMI Holdings has pledged to finish the first 700 units of Saglemi by March 2027, with the initial 1,500-unit phase slated for completion by December 2027.

During his inspection of the project in August 2026, President Mahama highlighted the developer's commitment and expressed confidence in their ability to deliver the housing units as per the timeline. He urged prospective buyers to register early for the houses once the sales portal becomes accessible, warning that demand will likely be steep.

The Saglemi project was conceived as a 5,000-unit affordable housing estate, but it was abandoned after a government change. Subsequent legal challenges and vandalism halted construction. The current plan involves partnering with LMI Holdings to complete the development. President Mahama emphasized that the estate will become a modern and convenient residential community for thousands of Ghanaian families.

Industries in the Tema and Dawa Industrial Park regions may also acquire the houses for their workers, making the project beneficial for both families and industries. The government will improve road and railway connections to the area, enhancing accessibility and efficiency. President Mahama anticipates that the project will be part of a larger industrial and residential growth corridor, aligning with the government's vision for a Green Digital City.

He expects the developer to meet the housing delivery schedule and aims to commission the first 700 units around Easter next year, followed by the remaining 1,500 units by December of the same year. The project complements the government's broader efforts to increase affordable housing and alleviate the financial strain caused by high rent advances on Ghanaian families.

GH¢500 million has already been allocated to the District Housing Scheme, with construction set to commence in selected districts as part of the government's housing agenda over the next four years.
