Russell on pole position for Dutch GP sprint race

Mercedes driver George Russell secured his first pole position for four races at the Dutch Grand Prix sprint qualifying. The 24-year-old British racer was 0.041 seconds faster than McLaren's Lando Norris in second place. Kimi Antonelli, Russell's Mercedes teammate, finished fifth, while Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri of McLaren completed the top five.

Max Verstappen of Red Bull took the sixth position, and Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari, who is second in the championship, was eighth, 50 points behind Antonelli. Russell expressed his happiness at reclaiming pole position after losing ground to Antonelli in the three races leading up to the summer break. The Briton noted that the sprint qualifying lap was challenging due to the limited time available, but everything worked out well. He hinted that the sprint race might offer an opportunity to reduce Antonelli's points advantage.

Norris praised his team's performance, stating that they were fast, and Ferrari also appeared quick. However, he admitted that the unexpected nature of the session had left the team with mixed feelings. Leclerc was content with his best qualifying lap of the year, while Hamilton acknowledged that the session did not go as planned and emphasized the need to investigate what went wrong.

Antonelli's error during the first session, resulting in an off-track incident, was a significant setback for the Italian. Eighth-placed Pierre Gasly, driving for Alpine, expressed satisfaction with his team's first major aerodynamic upgrade, while eighth-placed Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto and Red Bull's Arvid Lindblad rounded out the top ten.

Rookie Liam Lawson of Red Bull secured 11th place, demonstrating his impressive performance in his first experience with the team.
