Royal family gather at Balmoral as Harry, Meghan return

The royal family has gathered at Balmoral for their summer break following the announcement that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be returning to the United Kingdom after six years of departure. Prince Charles arrived at the Aberdeenshire retreat in Scotland on Tuesday, with Prince William, Kate, and the Princess Royal present as well. While William and Kate have not publicly commented on the news, they may privately converse with the broader family during their stay.

The current rift between Prince Harry and his younger brother, Prince William, stems from Harry's accusations against William, Kate, and the King and Queen after stepping back from royal duties. Some reports suggested a family summit, but it's understood to be a customary annual tradition for members of the extended royal family to stay at Balmoral during the northern hemisphere summer.

Charles, who learned of Harry and Meghan's plans just three days prior, is reported to be content to spend more time with the Sussex family but maintains that they will not be working royals. Meghan has reportedly been offered an acting role in an upcoming project in the UK, but the reasons for relocating to the UK have not been disclosed. The couple's move follows their first visit to their grandfather, King Charles III, in four years in July.

Concerns have arisen surrounding the Sussexes' finances, particularly regarding the question of whether taxpayers will cover their security costs. However, the Duchess will continue to run her lifestyle brand, As Ever, from their new residence. UK Prime Minister Andrea Burnham declined to comment on security arrangements, stating that the funding is a private matter.

Since stepping down as a working royal in 2020, Harry has been embroiled in a lengthy legal battle with the government over security for himself and his family while residing in the UK. Their arrangements may change when they become permanent residents again. Harry's security status was still pending a review by the Risk Management Board at the end of June, and he and his security detail were working to ensure a safe visit for his July trip.

The location of the Sussexes' new family home and the children's school has been instructed not to be publicly disclosed by UK media organizations.
