‘Robot Olympics’ runner nearly splits in half after viral China crash

A humanoid robot participating in the World Humanoid Robot Games, an Olympic-style event, suffered a severe malfunction during a training session in Beijing, China. The robot, while running, crashed into a wall and nearly split in half, causing sparks to fly. This incident has led to the viral spread of a video capturing the robot's catastrophic crash.

The event, set to take place again in China in 2026, features 666 teams and over 2,056 robots competing in various 50 events. The popularity of robotic sports has been steadily increasing, as evidenced by the participation of 16 countries in the inaugural Games held in China last year. Robots have been taking on roles traditionally held by humans, such as flag bearers and dance routines.

Despite the potential for widespread appeal, it remains uncertain if the World Humanoid Robot Games can achieve the same level of popularity as the Summer or Winter Olympics.
